1307 On Friday, October 13, as a birthday surprise for their Grand Master, hundreds of Knights Templar in France are simultaneously arrested by agents of Phillip the Fair, to be later tortured into "admitting" heresy. 
1792 1st Old Farmer's Almanac is published, but without pictures of hot, old farmers
1843 B'nai B'rith is born in NY and circumcised a few days later
1884 Meantime in Greenwich, the universal time meridian of longitude is established years before Einstein figures out that time and space are relative
1903 Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" premieres in New York City.  The auditions were enlightening.
1917 The "Miracle of the Sun" is "witnessed" by an estimated 70,000 ‘shroom and peyote eaters in the Cova da Iria in Fátima, Portugal.  Guess you had to be there.

1988 Shroud of Turin, revered by many Christians as Christ's burial cloth, is shown by carbon-dating tests to be a fake from the Middle Ages.  Recent critical methodological review raises questions about this conclusion, however.  So, it's still a maybe.  Watch this space for further developments.
1996 "Big" closes at Shubert Theater NYC after 193 performances
